September 11, 2023The concept of this book and its fly on the wall narrative was good for the first third, but after a while it became repetitive and tedious. I started to skim and that's never a good sign. This book was recommended to me, so it may appeal to others, but I couldn't wait to finish it and move on.

August 11, 2011This is a brilliant novel, and I would go so far as to say probably one of the most beautifully written books I have ever read. Rosamund Lupton writes with such elegance and depth... it is hard to describe how evocative, lyrical, refined, and sublime her choice of words is. She writes with such profound perspective. This is an interesting novel in the sense that it is written completely from the point of view of a comatose woman who has the ability to leave her body to discover the truth about an horrific event. I was lucky that I just stumbled upon Lupton's work by chance (she has written only one other novel to date (Sister)) and now I find some of my other previously favourite authors pale in comparison, as I find myself comparing their prose to Lupton's. The actual plot of this novel is quite simple, yet there is sufficient suspense to keep the reader hooked and even if you guess what has occurred, you still need to read right to the end to find out why. I also found that her characters are completely relatable and believable, which is pretty essential from a reader's perspective. I absolutely cannot rave enough about how stunning this book is!!

December 1, 2011Sister was extraordinary and a must read in my opinion and I couldn't wait for the next novel from Rosamund. Whether it's that factor of high expectations, but I was very disappointed with "Afterwards". Rosamund used the same style as "Sister" but it lacked the emotion and story credibility of her first novel. I was disappointed, but still worthwhile reading.
