Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon PC JP (18 February 1609 – 9 December 1674) was an English statesman, lawyer, diplomat and historian who served as chief advisor to Charles I during the First English Civil War, and Lord Chancellor to Charles II from 1660 to 1667.
Why was Edward Hyde exiled?
In 1667, King Charles II dismissed him from office, using him as a scapegoat for military failures and financial breakdown during the Dutch War. Impeachment proceedings were begun, and Edward Hyde fled England to live the remainder of his life in exile.
Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon, who was knighted in 1643 and raised to the peerage in 1661, enjoyed some of the highest political offices in the realm.
